Using Auto Warranty to Get Free Repairs You Are Entitled to Receive NOT 100 PERCENT FREE On the surface, the extended period of a bumper-to-bumper warranty may look like a wonderful deal, but be careful. It may lull you into a sense of security that can end up needlessly costing you money if a dealer is dishonest. Suppose the basic warranty on your car has expired when you spot a puddle of oil on the garage floor. You bring the car to a dealer service department and ask that it be repaired under the bumper-to-bumper warranty. The service manager may ask you to pay the $100 deductible, even when (unbeknownst to you) the repair involves simply tightening valve cover bolts. Some dealers will perform this five-minute repair for free; others will charge up to $25. Or, the dealer may tell you that a valve cover gasket has to be replaced—a procedure that can cost as much as $200. The dealer may correct the problem by tightening the valve cover bolts and charging you the $100 "deductible." This, of course, is dishonest. Most dealers don't engage in such practices. However, the best way to make sure you aren't blind-sided is to bring your car to the dealership where you bought it for all repairs that have to be made during the bumper-to-bumper warranty period. If this is not possible, find a dealer who sells your make of car and has been doing business in the community for a long time. You can check with the Better Business Bureau to determine whether any complaints have been lodged against a service department for this kind of double-dealing. If you suspect that you've been conned by a service department, take the matter up with the owner of the dealership; then, if necessary, with the manufacturer. Used Cars
